Transportation in Shanghai is very fast, convenient, and straightforward. There are metro, bus, and bikes that you can take when you go out and it is very cheap compared to Hawaii. You do not need to bring cash out as long as you have your phone with you because there is an application called "Metro大都会“, which you can download in app store or android when you are taking the metro in Shanghai. You will realize that cash is no longer a necessity in your daily life when you are living in Shanghai.
For bikes or bus, you can use Alipay without downloading an extra application. Costs for bus is usually $2 yuan a trip and bikes‘ cost varies depending on which brand you use. For example, the one I used is called "Hellobike", which cost $1.5 yuan for the first 15 minutes and additional $1 yuan after you past the time. Costs for metro also varies depending where you go, but it will be around $2-5 yuan from my own experience. For example, it will cost $5 yuan for metro from xuhui to minhang campus. It is also not free when you take the school shuttle to minhang campus, which it will cost $6 yuan for a single trip.
