Xuhui VS Minhang

Updated: Oct 20, 2019

As you can see on my schedule in my previous post, the location for some classes are different because SJTU has more than one campus. There are two main campuses that I have to go in SJTU are Xuhui and Minhang. These two campuses are very far away from each other, which you can either take the school shuttle, metro or DiDi to get there. It will take approximately 40 minutes shuttle or DiDi ride without traffic, whereas metro will take about an hour and a half. You do not have to choose classes at Minhang if you do not want to, but do recommend you to go there for a visit because the campus is very big and beautiful. Xuhui is the main campus where Antai college is and where the dorms are.

There are several gates on campus as well and this exit is known as the temple gate, where you will wait here for the school shuttle to go to Minhang.

I personally like to go to Minhang campus because it contains more canteens and restaurants than Xuhui even though it was far from the city. There are shared bikes all around the campus as well if you get tire of walking since the distance from one building to another is far from each other (you can use Alipay or Wechat pay to pay for the fees). You may also want to download some apps for maps such as amap or Baidu map for direction purpose and in case you get lost.

Courses/Libraries

Based on my past month's experience of attending courses at SJTU, I would say it was very similar to Manoa because some of the requirements are the same. Some courses would include attendance as one of your grades while some does not (you cannot miss more than 1/3 of classes or else you cannot take the final exam). There are some courses required a group project as one of the most heavy weight for your grades and no midterm or final exam. Classes at SJTU have 10-15 minutes breaks in between. For example, when you have a two hours and forty-five minutes class, there will be two 15 minutes breaks. You will be able to meet a lot of exchange and some local students in your courses since it will be English taught courses.

There are several libraries on xuhui/minhang campus where you can go there to study and even sit there the whole day, but it can get very crowded especially during the weekend. Its extremely difficult to find a seat in the library if you want to go during the weekend because seats will be all filled by the local students. Be ready to wake up early if you live off-campus. (Important Tips: remember to always bring your student ID with you because you will need it to enter the library!!)
